Couldn’t sleep, came across the 1975 Altman film Nashville on tv. Forgot about this movie, which, when I remember it, I count in my top 5. Dag.
Worth it just for Shelley Duvall with an afro, but so, so much more. This movie captures America and the impossible sorrow of being a person better than any other flick I can think of right now. In fact, it does it so well it makes me kind of happy. (I have a black tangled heart.)
two dollars’ worth of onion rings from Nick’s:

(I called to complain – hey, if I go in and tell ‘em my name, I can have 4 more…..I told the mgr. my name is “Paucity of Onion Rings Woman.”)
This is green:
My shirt is warm,
I have found a bone to rub across my tongue.
Sun on blowing leaves.
This is green:
Tires, a fire
made of wrong things; silence in a cup,
beans this morning brewed and clean.
Light on folding leaves.
And this:
Watching the comments of the dogs
sting the air;
the bray of people walking
out among the radio waves.
Summer of cold leaves.
This:
The giggling mountebank of winter,
with all the normal symptoms of ghost.
Leaves.
Dirty Creature come my way from the bottom of a big black lake
Shuffles up to my window making sure I’m awake
S’probably gonna pick my brain
Got me in a vice-like grip
He said one slip, your dead. Ha.
Dirty Creature of habit, Little horror here to stay
Anyone in his right mind would tell it to go away
But the river of dread runs deep, full of unspeakable things
The creature don’t mess around
I don’t wanna mess with him
I don’t wanna sail, I don’t wanna sail
I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna sail tonight
Dirty Creature’s got me at a disadvantage from the inside.
Tentacles on the brain keep me from falling asleep
I’m rooted to the spot, The beast don’t know when to stop
Sneaking up from behind, Binds and gags my wits
Dirty Creature got my head exactly where he wants it
I don’t wanna sail, I don’t wanna sail,
I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna sail tonight,
Taniwha is waiting for me just below the surface so bright
Even as we speak the Dirty Creature springs a nasty surprise.
Dirty Creature knows my type found it in a magazine
He’s seen the look of fear before splattered all over the screen
The animal magnet thug draws me out of myself
I need a dragon-slayer who can save me from myself
I don’t wanna sail, I don’t wanna sail,
I don’t wanna set sail for the middle of nowhere tonight
Dirty Creature’s got me at a disadvantage from the inside
I don’t wanna sail upon the waters of invention tonight
..when I cried watching Rush play Tom Sawyer live on The Colbert Report.
WTF, sometimes?

The Big Read thinks the average adult has only read six of the top 100 books they’ve printed below.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you read part of but never finished.
4) Strikethough those you hope to never read again, and sometimes wish you could un-read.
5) I personally am going to put a star beside the ones I have never heard of!! (GASP!!) (…or entirely disrecall having knowledge of….)- xty
